Wells Green TMD

Competitions can sometimes throw up remarkable designs, none more so than the compact Wells Green TMD layout created by teenager James Makin for the DEMU Showcase event in June 2005. This masterpiece in miniature measures a mere 62 inches by 11 inches, is inspired by Crewe depot and was James’ first exhibition layout. It was featured in the June 2005 magazine.

EWS 66241 prepares to leave the depot. The catenary portals are made from etched brass kits and the overhead wires are by Sommerfeldt.

An overhead view of the depot exposes its cramped location and reveals a highly detailed piece of modelling in the minimum space—the whole layout occupies no more than 750 square inches! Note the working lights.

Conversation piece: Two workers stand deep in conversation as a Class 90 passes through the washing plant. This view reveals a high standard of attention to detail, even down to the artists’ handiwork on the lineside structures.
