Maidens Dale

Shaun Robertson’s Maidens Dale began life as a seaside layout complete with quayside and beach, though this was never exhibited. It was subsequently abandoned and replaced with this Midland region inspired tail-chaser set in the 1960s. Measuring 11 ft by 6 ft 3 in, it uses Peco code 100 rail with electric pencil point operation. The majority of the buildings are scratch built and based on existing structures. The layout was featured in the December 2003 magazine.

First generation diesel units pass at Maidens Dale station, while an Austerity tank shepherds a short rake of wagons through the goods shed. In the background can be seen the engine shed and water tank.

Steam shed scenes are always evocative of a past era, but this view of Maidens Dale’s two road engine shed contains a visitor with a past—the legendary (or some might say notorious) Fell engine. Alongside is a more regular Midland line loco, a Jinty tank engine.

There is a great deal of activity in the scenic settings on Maidens Dale, typified by this back terrace view of some of the housing on the layout.
